Mid/Side, explained

Stereo isn't only Left and Right. There's a second way to look at the same signal — the centre and the width as separate things — and it unlocks moves you can't make any other way.

A stereo track is normally two channels: Left and Right. Mid/Side is a different way of looking at the exact same audio — not two speakers, but two qualities: what’s in the centre, and what makes it wide.

The actual maths (it’s just sum and difference)

You can convert any L/R signal to Mid/Side with two operations:

  • Mid = L + R — everything the two channels have in common. This is your centre.
  • Side = L − R — the difference between the channels. This is everything that isn’t dead-centre: the width.

And you can convert straight back:

  • Left = Mid + Side
  • Right = Mid − Side

(Plugins usually apply a 0.7071 — that’s 1/√2 — scaling on the way in and out so the loudness stays consistent, but the idea is exactly the sum-and-difference above.)

Nothing is added or thrown away. It’s the same signal, rotated so you can grab the centre and the sides independently.

What lives where

  • Mid (centre): the things you usually put dead-centre — lead vocal, kick, snare, bass.
  • Side (width): stereo reverb and delays, hard-panned doubles, wide synths, room mics, anything that makes the image feel big.

Why mixers reach for it

Once centre and sides are separate signals, you can process them differently — which is impossible with a normal stereo plugin:

  • Compress the Mid to lock the lead vocal and kick in place, without squashing the stereo reverb around them.
  • EQ the Sides to add air and sparkle to the width, without making the centred vocal harsh.
  • Control the low end by keeping bass in the Mid. Wide, out-of-phase low frequencies are the classic cause of a weak, flubby low end — and trouble the moment the mix is summed to mono.

The mono test you can’t skip

Here’s the catch that makes Mid/Side worth understanding: anything that lives only in the Side disappears in mono.

When a playback system sums to mono, it does L + R. Look at the maths above — the Side was L − R, so summing cancels it out completely, leaving only the Mid. A club sub (bass is usually summed to mono), plenty of single-driver Bluetooth, laptop and smart speakers, a lot of TVs — all mono or near-mono.

So that gorgeous super-wide effect can quietly vanish on half the devices your listeners use. Mid/Side isn’t only a creative tool; it’s how you make sure the important stuff is in the Mid where everyone will hear it, and the width is a bonus rather than a load-bearing wall.

Rule of thumb: if it has to be heard, keep it in the Mid. If it’s there to feel big, the Side is its home — and check it in mono before you commit.
