Attack & release: the two knobs that shape punch
Threshold and ratio decide how much a compressor grabs. Attack and release decide how it feels — punchy or squashed, breathing or pumping. Here's how to set them by ear.

Attack — the punch knob
Attack is how long the compressor waits, after the signal crosses the threshold, before it reaches full gain reduction.
- Slow attack (tens of milliseconds): the initial transient — the smack of a kick or snare — slips through before the compressor clamps down. The hit stays punchy; only the body behind it gets compressed.
- Fast attack (sub-millisecond to a few ms): the compressor catches the transient itself and pulls it down. More controlled and even — but push it and the life drains out: drums go flat, a vocal loses its consonants.
The rule of thumb: slower attack preserves punch, faster attack tames it. If a snare went lifeless when you compressed it, your attack is probably too fast.
Release — the breathing knob
Release is how long the compressor takes to let go and return to no reduction once the signal drops back below threshold.
- Too fast on bass-heavy material and the gain moves within a single low-frequency cycle — that creates distortion and a grabby sound.
- Too slow and the compressor never recovers between hits; it stays clamped, dynamics flatten, and on a bus it can duck the whole mix after a loud moment.
- Just right lets the level return by the next beat, so the compressor “breathes” with the groove. Tie release to the tempo and it feels musical.
Many compressors offer auto / program-dependent release, which adapts the recovery to the signal — a safe default when you’re unsure.
How to set them by ear
- Set threshold and ratio for the amount of reduction you want.
- Attack: start slow, then speed it up until the transients feel controlled — then back off slightly so the punch returns.
- Release: start with auto. For manual control, speed it up until you hear it pump or distort, then slow it down until each hit recovers cleanly by the next.
- Bypass at matched loudness and check you’ve added control, not just squashed the life out of it.
The same numbers feel different on different sources and compressor designs — a fast attack on an opto-style unit is gentler than on a clean feed-forward one. Trust your ears over the values.
